Child Soldier Book Review

Child Soldier
Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls Are Used in War

Michel Chikwanine & Jessica Dee Humphreys (Authors)
Claudia Dávila (Illustrator)
Kids Can Press
Children's Book, Middle Grades

Publication Date: September 1, 2015

At just five years old Michel Chikwanine was kidnaped by rebel soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Child Soldier is Michel Chikwanine’s true tale of his childhood experience of being abducted, being forced to do terrible things by a rebel army, and his ultimate escape from the violence.

Child Soldier is an honest yet age-appropriate look into a horrific experience that thousands of children continue to suffer through.  Chikwanine and Humphreys’ words coupled with Dávila illustrations build a candid but not overly graphic narrative.

Parents and teachers will want to read this book before sharing it with children, but it is an important story to share.
